Eduplation
My contribution for the print exchange is called: EDUPLATION
I have taken education documents [papers
such as; student projects, exams, tests, notes, mark-sheets etc.] which have
been collected over a number of years through my teaching and learning at Cape
Technicon/Cape Peninsular University of Technology.
The paper has been made into a knit-able
yarn by;
·
stitching sheets together on a
sewing machine
·
tearing long lengths from these
sheets of stitched paper
·
binding the lengths of yarn
into balls.
On the District 6 site I found some wood
from which I made knitting needles. With these needles and the
education-document-yarn I have knitted 60 000 stitches, into 50 [+5] pieces
[297mm by 420mm].
The Cape Technicon, now Cape Peninsular
University of Technology, city campus has been built on the District 6 site and
continues to gradually expand over the area. These expansions have ruffled
feathers within the community and there have been some outcries about the
increase of the campus.
Eduplaction was performed as a once-off
performance earlier this year as a First Thursday event at David Krut Pojects, Jan
Smuts Avenue in Johannesburg. http://davidkrutprojects.com/41094/eduplation-a-one-off-performance-by-mark-rautenbach
[7 July 2016].
The performance invited the viewer to
participate by sitting with the matter and asks the question; does institutionalised education continue to
displace people?
